COTABATO CITY—The National Government, through the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), announced the forthcoming awarding of 29 Bangsamoro local government units (LGUs) for 2024 Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG).
Under Section 2 of Republic Act No. 1192, s. 2019—otherwise known as The Seal of Local Governance Act of 2019—the SGLG is an award, incentive, honor, and recognition-based program for all the LGUs and is a continuing commitment for LGUs to continually progress and improve their performance.
Out of 730 LGUs in the Philippines, only 714 qualified for recognition, including the 29 in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), to wit: Maguindanao del Sur (MDS) for provinces; Lamitan City for cities; and two (2) municipalities in Basilan, four (4) in Lanao del Sur (LDS), eight (8 in Maguindanao del Norte (MDN), and 13 in MDS for the category of municipalities.
On Nov. 15, the Ministry of Interior and Local Government (MILG) shared that the SGLG highlights achievements in governance, which encompasses transparency, accountability, disaster preparedness, and peace and order, among others.
“The efforts of these local governments reflect the region’s growing commitment to effective governance and public service, aligning with BARMM’s broader objectives of promoting development and good governance in the region,” the MILG posted on its Facebook page.
BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim and MILG Minister Atty. Sha Elijah B Dumama-Alba both underscored that the LGUs’ accomplishments pattern to the overall goal of the Bangsamoro Government—empowered, cohesive, and progressive Bangsamoro—under the 2nd Bangsamoro Development Plan, a comprehensive roadmap that outlines the region’s development priorities and strategies from 2023 to 2028.
“Ebrahim emphasized that this milestone is not just a recognition of effective governance but a validation of BARMM’s ongoing efforts to uplift its communities through capable and responsive local governments,” the MILG also posted.
The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the BARMM LGUs in enhancing their governance practices, further saying, “The recognition […] stands as a significant milestone in the region’s drive to create resilient and responsive local governments.”
The SGLG awarding ceremony will take place before 2024 ends.
Fostering good governance that impels transparency, accountability, and improvement is the first priority agenda of CM Ebrahim. (Johamin Inok/BIO with reports from the MILG)
