COTABATO CITY—Bureau of Investments (BOI) of the Ministry of Trade, Investments and Tourism (MTIT) is setting up a road map with the aim of reviving poultry industry in the Bangsamoro region by providing investment information, opportunities, and capacity building.
Recently [August 2021], the BOI spearheaded a poultry industry investment forum in this city, which gathered the poultry growers and investors.
The activity was in collaboration with the Philippine Halal Manok Corporation (PHMC), Eberman Corporation, Landbank of the Philippines (LBP), and Amanah Islamic Bank (AIB).
Bangsamoro region recorded the biggest annual decline of -50.6 percent during the first quarter of 2021, equivalent to 1,708 metric tons shortage, compared to the first quarter of 2020 that is equivalent to 844 metric tons.
One of the seen reasons on the decline of production was mainly due to weak demand from the consumers brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.
MTIT Deputy Minister Atty. Sukarno Abas said, “the community lockdowns heavily affected the hotels, restaurants and institutional industries, where an estimated one third of all chicken demand is consumed plus the temporary halt in businesses operations and job loss have also led to lower consumer spending.”
“We are hopeful that this activity will help revive the industry, generate investments, and eventually, become full blown enterprises that will propel the creation of jobs and income for the Bangsamoro,” Abas added.
Data from the region’s Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA-BARMM) showed that around 1.8 million chicken produced in BARMM for year 2020, Lanao del Sur became the top producer (36%), followed by Sulu (22%), Basilan (21%), Tawi-Tawi (18%), and Maguindanao (13%).
In his message, BARMM Chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim said, “it is with the growing potential that poultry was chosen to be part of the agribusiness sector listed in the 2020 BARMM investment priorities plan which provide investors with the same industry to avail various fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.”
“The Bangsamoro that thrives in business and investments is a Bangsamoro that can truly move forward towards lasting development in the region,” the Chief Minister added.
In his statement, MTIT Minister Abuamri Taddik believed that “the activity will enable our potential poultry growers to identify and connect with our private partners who believe in the potential of poultry industry and provide them with complimentary services, expertise, technologies and business strengths.” (Bangsamoro Information Office)
