ISABELA CITY—Basilan Schools Division Office (SDO) held its multi-level educational athletic competition in the category of elementary and secondary level on February 7-11, 2024.
Held in the Municipality of Maluso, the activity is in preparation for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Athletics Association (BARMMAA) 2024.
Assistant Division Superintendent Ibno Saddalan said the week-long competition was participated by various private and public schools in eleven (11) municipalities of the province.
“We aim to inculcate the spirit of discipline, teamwork, promote and achieve peace by means of sports which had been hampered by conflicts in recent years,” Saddalan said.
Sumisip Municipality bagged champions in both levels — 50 golds in secondary and 27 golds in elementary; 1st runner-up in elementary went to Lantawan Municipality which garnered 24 golds, and 3rd in Secondary 21 golds.
Meanwhile, Tipo-Tipo Municipality ranked as 1st runner-up in secondary level with 27 golds, and 3rd in elementary with 9 golds. The host Maluso garnered 2nd runner-up in both levels — secondary 25 golds and 18 golds in elementary.
Provincial Board Member Amin Hataman of first district emphasized the significance of athletic association by the academic institutions.
“There are important lessons and take aways to be learned from the athletic youths’ competitions. In sports, it’s win or lose, it teaches students how to communicate properly, what’s important is helping each other and knowing how to work as a team,” Hataman said.
11 towns under Basilan SDO include Akbar, Albarka, Lantawan, Maluso, Muhammad Ajul, Muhtamad, Sumisip, Tabuan-Lasa, Tuburan, Tipo-Tipo and Unkaya Pukan, while Lamitan City is another division separate from Basilan. (Majid Nur with reports from MBHTE Basilan Division)
