COTABATO CITY—Jamiat Buldon Al Islamia High School from the Municipality of Buldon, Maguindanao de Norte (MDN), emerged as the winner in Kuyog Streetdancing and Showcase Competition held at Cotabato State University (CSU) Grounds on Dec. 18.
The Kuyog Streetdancing and Showcase Competition is an annual dance contest that takes place during the Shariff Kabunsuan (SK) Festival.
This celebration highlights the rich tapestry of culture and arts in mainland BARMM, showcasing talents and depicting various life narratives prevalent in the region.
The winning team presented the love story of Datu Bantugan and Paramata Gandingan, unfolding their tales and adventures.
Moreover, this year’s dance event featured participation from Bangsamoro schools and troupe contingents from the Municipalities of Matanog, Buldon, and Sultan Kudarat in MDN, as well as the Municipality of Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat, narrating diverse BARMM life stories.
Jamiat Buldon Al Islamia High School from Buldon, MDN, claimed the championship and was awarded P350,000. They were followed by Kudaraten Cultural Dance Ensemble from Sultan Kudarat, MDN, landing as the first runner-up with a prize of P250,000.
Matanog National High School Iranun Pebpharasan from Matanog, MDN, was declared the second runner-up with a P150,000 cash prize. Kislap Pag-asa Performing Arts from Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat, was named the third runner-up, winning P100,000.
Cotabato City Mayor Mohammad Ali “Bruce” Matabalao emphasized that the competition serves as an anchor, reminding the Bangsamoro people of their roots.
“The dancers’ graceful movements, vibrant costumes, and the infectious beats of the music are not just entertainment but a powerful expression of our identity and values,” Matabalao said.
He further urged the Cotabateños to preserve and pass on the community’s cultural heritage to coming generations. (Johamin Inok/BIO)
