COTABATO CITY – Philippine Statistics Authority of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PSA-BARMM) virtually kicked off Monday, October 4, the month-long celebration of the 32nd National Statistics Month in the region.
This year’s theme:“NSM@32: Revving up for Economic and Social Recovery Through Evidence-Based Policies”, highlights the importance of statistics as bases for policy decisions to address the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19.
Hosting Monday’s opening ceremony, Labor and Employment Minister Romeo K. Sema acknowledged PSA-BARMM’s determination in providing the Bangsamoro Government and the public with relevant and accurate statistical information beneficial to the region.
Minister Sema said: “It is more evident that our economic recovery from the crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic depends on reliable data and effective policies.”
“Additionally, the Bangsamoro Government, through Moral Governance, is always supportive of every initiative and mandate to protect and acquire the vital information or data for our social needs,” he added.
On the other hand, BARMM Chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim believed in the necessity of relevant statistics in addressing the socioeconomic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and encouraged everyone in rebuilding the region’s economy.
“Governments across the world will never be able to recuperate if their best plan forward is to take random chances without supplementing their actions with evidenced-based policies,” said Ebrahim
“The PSA, in many ways, is essential in making that possible. For it is through their work that we get the actual situation on the ground – factual, timely and issue-based,” he further explained.
Presidential Proclamation No. 647 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino on September 20, 1990, declared the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors the society.
