Cotabato City (July 2, 2020) – The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST-BARMM) is calling for applicants for its Bangsamoro Assistance for Science Education (BASE) Program that will grant this year’s incoming freshmen college students a monthly cash assistance amounting to Php8,000.00.
MOST Minister and Member of Parliament Engr. Aida Silongan led the BASE Program’s launching ceremony held in the city on Wednesday, July 1.
Silongan said that supporting science education through providing cash assistance will greatly help the students’ financial problems. She said the MOST can accommodate at least 126 students for the BASE Program.
BASE Program aims to “stimulate and entice talented Bangsamoro youths to pursue lifetime productive careers in science and technology and ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified science and technology human resources which can steer the country towards national progress.”
The following are the general qualification for the applicants of the said program:
-A natural-born Filipino citizen and a resident of BARMM;
-Attained an 85% general average, with good moral character and in good health;
-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand senior high school graduating class;
-Member of the top five percent (5%) of the Non-STEM strand senior high school graduating class;
-Less privileged, deserving student who belongs to a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of certain indicators (not more than Php 250,000.00 annual family income);
-Not a recipient of other scholarship programs;
-Do not have any post-secondary or undergraduate units; and
-Must pass the BASE Program Examination and pursue a Bachelor of Science degree program in any of the priority fields of the state university or colleges in any private higher education institution that is recognized by Commission on Higher Education.

The deadline for application is on July 22, 2020, while the date of the qualifying exam will be on August 22, 2020.
Furthermore, Silongan said MOST-BARMM will also support several schools in improving their capacities in teaching Science and Technology through training teachers and upgrading of science laboratories.
During Wednesday’s ceremony, Minister Silongan also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Minister Mohagher Iqbal of the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education to formalize their partnership in implementing the BASE Program. (Bureau of Public Information)
